Sculpture Practice in Shanghai, 2017

Creating access to creative spaces can be a daunting task, especially in countries like China, where such opportunities are not always widely available. That’s why I was thrilled to be part of a project that aimed to design and build wood, metal, and ceramics studios to open up the world of creativity to those who may not have access to it otherwise.

As an assistant to chief designer Douglas Borkman, my role involved collaborating with equipment manufacturers in both the United States and China to ensure that the equipment met the project’s requirements. I was also responsible for installing and testing the equipment and designing workshops for the space’s first students.

This project allowed me to combine my experience as an art and design educator with my commitment to creating opportunities for tactile and creative exploration. It was rewarding to see participants discover new ways of touching, shaping, and understanding materials through making.
