Hearing Heavy Weight

2024; Brass, Portuguese beige marble; 11.2 × 9.9 × 22.5 in; 3+1AP

This sculpture explores the tension between external information and internal consciousness, visualized through the combination of ears and rooster-shaped earrings. Jin abstracted the ears into the form of butterflies, giving them a sense of lightness and the desire to break free and soar, while also adorning them with heavy rooster earrings. The rooster’s loud crowing symbolizes noise and interference, much like how earrings, while decorative, can also bring a sense of weight and restraint. When human consciousness confronts external sounds, it mirrors the tension between the ears longing to fly and the earrings pulling them downward, embodying a conflict in direction.
